HOLLYWOOD—The 17th annual Screen Actors Guild nominees were announced on Thursday, December 16, and leading the nominations on the film side were “The King’s Speech” and “The Fighter.” Each is tied for four nominations. Contenders for Outstanding Performance by a cast in a Motion Picture include “The Fighter,” “Black Swan,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “The King’s Speech” and “The Social Network.”  Missing from the list was fan favorite and critic’s darling “Inception.”

Nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role include James Franco “127 Hours,” Jesse Eisenberg “The Social Network,” Colin Firth “The King’s Speech,” Robert Duvall “Get Low” and Jeff Bridges “True Grit.”  Left off the list of nominees were Mark Wahlberg for his performance in “The Fighter” and Ryan Gosling from “Blue Valentine.” Both are likely to be in contention for an Oscar nomination come next month.

Nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role are Natalie Portman “Black Swan,” Annette Bening “The Kids Are All Right,” Nicole Kidman “Rabbit Hole,” Jennifer Lawrence “Winter’s Bone” and Hilary Swank “Conviction.”  At the moment, Portman, Kidman, Bening and Lawrence look like locks for Oscar nominations, but that fifth spot is still a battle between Halle Berry, Michelle Williams and perhaps Julianne Moore.

Those vying for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role include Christian Bale “The Fighter,” Geoffrey Rush “The King’s Speech,” John Hawkes “Winter’s Bone,” Jeremy Renner “The Town” and Mark Ruffalo “The Kids Are All Right.”  Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role include Melissa Leo “The Fighter,” Helena Bonham Carter “The King’s Speech,” Amy Adams “The Fighter,” Mila Kunis “Black Swan” and Hailee Steinfeld “True Grit.”

On the television side of things, those in contention for Female Actor in a Drama Series are Juliana Margulies “The Good Wife,” Elisabeth Moss “Mad Men,” Kyra Sedgwick “The Closer,” Mariska Hargitay “Law and Order: SVU” and Glenn Close “Damages.”  Candidates for Male Actor in a Drama Series are Steve Buscemi “Boardwalk Empire,” Bryan Cranston “Breaking Bad,” Michael C. Hall “Dexter,” Jon Hamm “Mad Men” and Hugh Laurie “House.”  Those vying for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series include “Boardwalk Empire, “The Closer,” “Dexter,” “The Good Wife” and “Mad Men.”

On the comedy side, the nominees for Male Actor include Alec Baldwin “30 Rock,” Ty Burrell “Modern Family,” Steve Carell “The Office,” Chris Colfer “Glee” and Ed O’Neill “Modern Family.”  This will be a very interesting race, and at the moment I would say it’s a three-way race between “Modern Family” stars Burrell, O’Neill and “Glee” actor Colfer.

Nominees for Female Actor in a Comedy Series include Edie Falco “Nurse Jackie,” Tina Fey “30 Rock,” Jane Lynch “Glee,” Sofia Vergara “Modern Family” and Betty White “Hot in Cleveland.”  My initial thought was that Vergara and Lynch would vie for the top prize, but Betty White and Edie Falco are both dark horses who could upset. The nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series are “30 Rock,” “Glee,” “Hot in Cleveland,” “Modern Family” and “The Office.”The 17th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be held on Sunday, January 30, 2011, live from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles at 8 p.m. (EST), 5 p.m. (CST) on TNT and TBS.  This awards season is shaping up to be one of the most interesting in years, with so many contenders and no clear-cut favorites many surprises are expected to occur, which makes a fascinating award season.
