UNITED STATES—According to Worldometer, abortion was the number one cause of death in the world for 2018. As of December 31, 2018 there were 4.9 million abortions performed in the year.

Worldometer compiles its figures by using findings from world governments and other world organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO). The group does not count abortions in its calculations of the total deaths in 2018 which was 59 million.

Breitbart compared abortion to other causes of death and reported that there were more deaths caused by abortion in 2018 than by cancer, malaria, HIV/AIDS, alcohol, smoking, and traffic accidents combined. Breitbart added that for every 33 live births there were 10 infants that died from abortion.

Over 8.2 million people died from cancer, 5 million people died from smoking and 1.7 million people died from HIV/AIDS.

According to the latest Center for Disease Control and Prevention data, abortion hit a historic low since the U.S. Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade, Faithwire reported in November 2018. Over 60 million fetuses have died in abortion cases since Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion in January 22, 1973. Abortion claims the lives of 1 million babies in America each year.
