BEVERLY HILLS—On Sunday night, Hollywood and the world will celebrate the 83rd Annual Academy Awards®. This week I give my predictions for the winners and our reader’s most favorite hopefuls. Filmmaker Brittany Bomann is being honored, Douglas Tait will materialize in the band “Disturbed’s” new music video and my friend Kate Linder, who stars on CBS’s number-one rated soap “The Young and the Restless,” invited me to listen in on “How Hollywood and Celebrities Can Be A Force For Good” campaign at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences offices.

Academy Award® nominated actor for “127 Hours” James Franco and Hollywood “It” girl Anne Hathaway will be hosting the evening at the Oscars. Both stars are extremely popular with the public and their peers, and Franco’s going to shine bright on stage as he has been rehearsing religiously since being picked as the show’s host for the 83rd Academy Awards.

Of the Best Picture nominations, “True Grit,” “Black Swan,” “The Fighter,” “The Social Network,” “127 Hours” and “The King’s Speech” are the serious contenders this year. I believe “Black Swan” will take home the award, but I am rooting for “True Grit.” Best Actor in a Leading Role nominations are: Javier Bardem, Jeff Bridges, Colin Firth, James Franco and Jesse Eisenberg. My choice for this coveted award is Jeff Bridges, but I am almost certain Colin Firth will receive the award.

For Best Actor in a Supporting Role nominees are: Christian Bale, John Hawkes, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Geoffrey Rush. My money is on Geoffrey Rush, but my vote goes to Christian Bale.

Best Actress in a Leading Role nominees include: Annette Bening, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams. Portman is the winner for sure, in my opinion. For Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominees are: Amy Adams, Helena Bonham Carter, Melissa Leo, Hailee Steinfeld and Jackie Weaver. Though the prevailing thought is for Bonham Carter to win, my belief is 16-year-old Hailee Steinfeld’s performance in “True Grit” has garnered last-minute Oscar voters to her side. She’s my choice for upset during the evening.

The final important award is Outstanding Directing. This is perhaps the toughest and most competitive category. Nominees are Darren Aronofsky for “Black Swan,” David O. Russell for “The Fighter,” Tom Hooper for “The King’s Speech,” David Fincher for “The Social Network” and Joel Coen and Ethan Coen for “True Grit.” I’ve never been a fan of the Coen brothers’ work in the past, but this year they have me hooked. This is the toughest race to predict, but I am going for the Coen brothers to win with the possibility of David Fincher beating them. Everyone nominated this year is deserving.

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards® will air on ABC starting at 8 p.m. See the full list of nominees, and check out this year’s first ever camcorders in every area of the telecast Sunday night at Oscar.go.com.

My friend Christopher Atkins and I are excited that his talented daughter’s, Brittney Bomann, short film “Melissa” is being shown at the Los Angeles Women’s International Film Festival next month on March 31. The film will air at Laemmle’s Sunset 5 in West Hollywood at 4 p.m. “It has been so exciting. I have been crossing my fingers but I knew I had a really great piece and I shouldn’t be too worried. With talent like Christopher [Atkins] and Emily Grace [Reaves], it’s really hard to go wrong! I am really excited to mingle with the rest of the filmmakers and, hopefully, fans of ”˜Melissa’ at the festival,” said Bomann.

My “The Chauffer” costar, monster man Douglas Tait told me this week, “Tommy, I am excited about some news I want to share with you and your readers. I will be making history in the new music video by the band ”˜Disturbed.’ For years the band’s mascot was this scary creature that they always showed in drawings and paintings. Well, I will be putting on makeup yet again to create a live flesh and blood version of the creature. I’m very excited about it. The band is extremely popular and so far 2011 has been going great for me.” Tait is known for films such as “Freddy vs. Jason” and “Thor,” where he often portrays some of our most popular movie villains. “They chose me to [materialize] him in their new video. The band is super excited about it, and so am I,” concluded the actor. For a sneak peek at Douglas as an Ice Giant in the upcoming epic film “Thor,” here’s the official film’s trailer.

My dear friend actress Kate Linder (Esther Valentine on “The Young and the Restless” and spokesperson for the ALS Association), JoAnne Worley (president, Actors and Others for Animals) and Christine Devine (news anchor/reporter for Fox 11 and My13, and producer of “Wednesday’s Child,” an ongoing child adoption segment) met with non-profit organizations at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to talk about the organization “How Hollywood and Celebrities Can Be A Force For Good” at the monthly Print Interactive Radio and Television Educational Society meeting (piratesla.org).

My friend Kate is tirelessly helping others. She also is frequently involved with the L.A. Mission, which helps feed the homeless in our region.

Have a great night watching the Oscars and a safe and happy week, see you next week!
