HOLLYWOOD-Many expected “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” to win the box-office, but the numbers it put up this weekend were incredible.  The sequel to 2011 first foray into the saga involving Steve Rogers shattered box-office numbers with more than $96 million at theaters. The film was a major hit overseas; so far the film has grossed more than $303 million.

While there was plenty to see at the multiplexes for audiences this weekend, Marvel’s sequel to the shield-wearing superhero was no competition for previous releases like “Noah,” “Divergent,” “300: Rise of an Empire.”

Taking the #2 spot was last week’s box-office champ “Noah” with a little over $17 million. After only two weeks in theaters the biblical flick has already amounted more than $72 million domestically. Falling into the #3 spot is the action-thriller “Divergent” with about $13 million.

Next week will test “The Winter Soldier’s” staying power, as the highly anticipated animated flick “Rio 2″ arrives in theaters. Back in 2011, the film opened to more than $40 million in its first week in theaters.

While I suspect “Captain America’s” to stay on top, it will be a dogfight between a bunch of wise talking birds and a shield-throwing superhero.
