HOLLYWOOD—The promos for the buddy flick “Let’s Be Cops” have been airing all over the place, so it was impossible not to miss it. This comedy starring “New Girl” alums Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson is full of funny, outrageous and epic laughs that audiences will not soon forget. The premise revolves around Ryan (Johnson) and Justin (Wayans Jr.), buddies whose careers haven’t taken off as they expected.

The friends have been down on their luck for quite some time, and are ready to finally throw in the towel after failing to make it big in the city of dreams, when a chance encounter with some authentic cop uniforms change everything. The duo who dress as cops for their college reunion party, become tagged as actual cops and run with the idea.

Yep, the idea seems so direct, yet it works so perfect for this movie. Its like why in the world hadn’t I thought of that; it’s the perfect idea for a comedy, especially when pushing the R-rated envelope as this movie does? Think of this as “ 21 Jump Street,” but without ‘real’ cops.

The pranks that the buddies pull on unsuspecting victims literally had me falling out of my theater seat: the guy on the skateboard, the people at the club, the unsuspecting sorority sisters. Even though these gags are specified in the script, it perfect comedic timing from Johnson and Wayans Jr. that sells the idea.

The chemistry between Johnson and Wayans Jr. carry the film throughout its typical buddy flick that has been seen time and time again. It also doesn’t hurt to have funnyman Rob Riggle as a police officer who is hoodwinked by the friend’s caper.

In an interesting role, Nina Dobrev removes the serious to tackle the funny portraying Josie, a waitress who becomes a love interest for Justin.  The movie has many typical slapstick comedy moments, but they work so well in particular settings and at the right moment, as a viewer, the laughs are begging to erupt.

Wayans has always proven to be a funnyman thanks to his genetics, while Johnson has showcased his ability on “New Girl” his able to take those comedic chops to new heights in the movie arena. “Let’s Be Cops” is one of the surprise comedies of the summer, but this is an unexpected laugh fest that delivers from start to finish.
