DENVER, CO—The Anaheim Ducks came into Wednesday night’s game against the Colorado Avalanche riding a 14-game point streak. That streak came to an end after a 3-0 loss at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

The Ducks put on an offensive onslaught, peppering the Avalanche net minder, Semyon Varlamov, with 37 shots, but he was able to stop them all garnering his second shutout of the season.

On the other end, Colorado had much less shot production, putting 26 shots on net, but was able to make the most of those shots capitalizing on fast breaks and breakaway opportunities.

John Gibson finished with 23 saves in the loss and saw his personal five-game point streak come to an end with the regulation loss.

Young Avalanche star, Nathan MacKinnon, put Colorado on the board with a goal at the halfway point of the first period. The Avs second goal came from a far less likely suspect.

Norwegian forward, Andreas Martinsen, had been a healthy scratch the previous four games before getting the call to suit up for Wednesday night’s game.

“He’s been working really hard in the practices, and I thought that was a big team, and I thought that would be a great fit for him,” said Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy. “He scored a big goal for us.”

He certainly made the most of his opportunity. At the 17:19 mark of the second period, Martinsen crossed into the Anaheim zone and then received a pass from teammate Matt Duchene. As he skated through the slot he moved the puck to his backhand and fired a shot top shelf past goalie John Gibson for his first goal in 31 games.

Shawn Matthias put the third goal in for the Avalanche a mere two minutes later.

The three goals were more than enough as Varlamov stood firm in the third period sealing the victory.

“We got away from the way we play,” said Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau. “We gave up more odd-man rushes in a five-minute span than we’ve given up in the last 15 games. You can’t just play up and down against a fast-skating team. We have to play with structure. We have to have guys back and able to defend.”

The Ducks hope to bounce back and return to their winning ways when they travel to St. Louis on Friday night.

The Avalanche took a two-point lead over the idle Minnesota Wild for the final playoff wild-card spot.
