HOLLYWOOD—Well, for the third consecutive weekend, the DC Comic book hero “Aquaman” remained at the top spot of the box-office. Dare I say DC Comics has finally crafted a film that is comparable to the Marvel universe in terms of quality and box-office performance hauling in $31 million. The movie has since earned over $260 million at the domestic box-office and is just $60 million shy from hitting a global tally of $1 billion.
The big surprise at theaters over the weekend was the debut of the thriller “Escape Room.” The horror flick earned an impressive $18 million to land in second place. For a movie that seemed to be dropped at a time where January is known for studios dumping the worse of the worse in their arsenal, this flick tantalized audiences in a good way. The musical “Mary Poppins Returns” landed in third place with $15.8 million, and has now grossed over $138 million since its release just before Christmas.
The flicks “Bumblebee” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” rounded out the top five. Both flicks are currently in a close battle for fourth place buzzing around the $13 million mark. I seriously can’t believe I’m saying this, but it is a strong possibility that “Aquaman” will four-peat at theaters this weekend. Two new films arrive, “The Upside” starring Kevin Hart, Nicole Kidman and Bryan Cranston and “A Dog’s Way Home.” However, I don’t know if either of those films will be able to dethrone Jason Momoa and “Aquaman.” I think the flick will face a battle when “Glass” hits theaters on January 18.
