Bobby Solorio, The Man Behind Kathy Griffin’s Weight Loss
Posted by Ashley Halloran on Jul 2, 2006 - 9:00:00 PM

Kathy Griffin

On recent episodes of the Bravo series “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List,” in the midst of her sarcasm and preparation for her show in Iraq, Griffin has set the goal to lose 10 pounds in 40 days.  Griffin originally intended to go from 138 to 128 pounds, yet when she alerted Star Magazine about her plans, they challenged her to drop an extra 2 pounds down to 126.  For a woman who believes “losing junk food is much worse than losing a family member,” taking off 12 pounds in 40 days is quite the test. As a result, Griffin enrolled both a nutritionist and her private trainer, Bobby Solorio, to help her along the way.

Bobby Solorio, a Bay Area native, began his professional life as a dancer with Disney, and performed in Japan for several years.  Solario said, "I still consider dance my true passion but by 1999  it was time for something else.”  So it was then he decided to become a personal trainer.  He received an American Council on Exercise (ACE) certification and began working at 24-hour Fitness, in Glendale, yet after a month was recruited at Gold’s Gym in Hollywood, where he was eventually given an independent position that he holds to this day.

Solorio first appears on “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List” raiding Griffin’s kitchen for Twinkies, Twizzlers, and every other processed food imaginable, to force her to make healthy choices and enter the fitness mode. He claimed that losing these items from her kitchen was definitely a greater challenge than the exercise itself, seeing as she has been eating mainly junk food her whole life.  On one episode, Griffin claimed to be “on her deathbed” with a horrible stomachache from broccoli, because her stomach, so used to potato chips and cookies, was rejecting the healthy food.

Solorio first got involved with Kathy Griffin through a Gold’s Gym client, and he claims "She called me up and said Bobby we need to talk and haggled with me for a lower rate," and he  has been working with her for the past year.  Despite her complaining and unhealthy habits, Solorio confesses that in reality "Kathy is a lot of fun and a really hard worker; she is always asking what comes next?”

For the “D-List Celeb” who has gone from thin to fit, and for all who seek a healthy and fit body, Solorio recommends eating five to six small meals per day, consisting of enough protein and “the right carbohydratess to keep the metabolism going.” When asked what the secret is to keeping in shape Solario replied,  "Many people think that not eating is the key to weight loss, but they are mistaken; the key is consistency.”
