American Issues

World Conflict
Posted by Jason Wright on Oct 29, 2004 - 4:02:00 PM

Throughout the world nations are faced with conflict due to different ideas and perceptions on the way life should be lived. These different ways of life can range from religion, business or even environmental issues. Certain people and groups feel the only way to address these issues is with violence. Beatings, bombings, and executions are some of the methods used by a number of activists who try to make their point known and felt by the world.

Americans have fallen victim to these radical groups and are currently facing these issues by using the same methods as those used by the combative groups. Bombings, firefights and mass destruction are utilized by our country along with other nations as “preventative” or “retaliation” methods to try and discourage these extremists from more attacks. The idea of “killing the brain and the body will follow” can be seen in both instances in the Middle East. Once Saddam was captured, the majority felt that Iraq would become a land of law, but instead has become a lawless land of crime and destruction. Which brings the theory of “it must get worst if you want it to get better” as being one way of justifying the current situation.

Beliefs are much stronger and weigh heavier with people than logic and common sense. Emotions can be uncontrollable and for some people impossible to control. People who are taught nothing other than one way of life with great emphasis on a belief are usually unable to change their ideas once they reach adulthood. The majority of these individuals can be viewed as extremist. These are the people that are being dealt with in the Middle East. It will take a new upbringing of their youth in order to kill off the way of thought that their elders have been brought up with. It will only be after centuries of advancement and teachings that the population will change their beliefs and ways.

The other side that can be argued is who is correct on how a life should be? Is it the American way of life that is appropriate for everyone? There are many countries who believe that their way of life is the best way of life. Canada is great in size and yet has one of the lowest crime rates. Sweden sends every resident into the military and yet remains a neutral country that has not been to war for centuries. We all have different beliefs, religions and ideas which can be argued as the best way of life. None of them are wrong and none of them are right. It is the extremist who believes that death and destruction is the proper way to promote what they believe and when they try to take this action, we should do everything we can to prevent it.
