Leo Carrillo Dog Beach
Posted by on Sep 1, 2002 - 6:11:00 PM

QUESTION:

Isn't Leo Carrillo Beach up at the north end of Malibu? Is there another one in Santa Monica? I'm looking for a place to let my dog run a little and see the ocean. I haven't been to Leo Carrillo. What about Dockweiler?

Thanks for your help.

Pat

ANSWER:

Dear Pat,

If you want to take your dog to Leo Carrillo beach, just head all the way out Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu (30 miles north of Santa Monica) until you get to El Matador and Leo Carrillo -- especially in the winter, there's no one there but the windsurfers.

This beach was named after Leo Carrillo, a popular radio and TV performer. This particular state beach allows leashed dogs. The only restriction is that they are not allowed between towers two and three (the busiest part of the beach). You and your pup can stroll along the rest of this 1.5 mile-long beach. If you want a longer walk, go back under the freeway and there are miles of dog-friendly trails. The mountain trail can have ticks and rattlesnakes nearby, so be careful! A small general store is located on the mountain side of the freeway. Here you can grab some snacks and other items. The park is located on Hwy 1, approximately 30 miles northwest of Santa Monica. Their phone number is 818-880-0350.

Also, you can enjoy a wonderful dog beach if you go about 45 minutes south to Huntington Beach. There are dog parks (not beaches) in Pacific Palisades as well as in Hollywood Hills. Please look at Canyon News' Dog Park section.

Huntington Beach, CA with a population of 210,000 is located 37 miles south of Los Angeles and 89 miles north of San Diego. Dog Beach is located on Pacific Coast Highway between 21st Street and Seapoint St(about 10 miles from Disneyland in Anaheim). Three quarters of a mile of Golden sands and the exciting Pacific Ocean have made Dog Beach a paradise for dogs where they can frolic in the water and taste a sense of freedom--rarely found elsewhere.
