UNITED STATES—Especially now, any kind of escapism is welcomed by many. Be it superheros or other intricate worlds of entertainment, the idea of escapism has not escaped many.
In Virgina DeBerry and Donna Grant's newest literary venture, "What Doesn't Kill You: A Novel," the reality is all about escaping the grim. This title is published by Simon & Schuster.
The story charts a family's story, through the narrative of the fictional Thomasina Hodges, a hardworking yet grounded woman who has been through more than her share of heartache and heavy-lifting, metaphorically and literally. The story begins with Thomasina's last few days, including the lead-up to her only daughter's wedding, the gala festivities and the resulting events that make her reflect on a life she ultimately must love. There is something very tender and realistic about the interaction between mother and daughter in this book. The combination of foreshadowing and reflections works well and allows the reader a peak into the soul of a woman who loves the work of life, but mostly loves her family.
This is a story with heart and obvious warmth. The writing style is familiar, so readers may be surprised at first, though they should not be surprised if rather quickly, they feel much at ease with the up close and personal narrative voice. This may be a good read for those who are down over the recent tumultuous activity in the financial world and are looking for a simple and readily accessible way to get away from it all.
The generation which came out of the Great Depression left behind many legacies, not least of which is the clear-cut idea that in times of woe, many will still flock to the theaters and to available and quick ways to briefly run away from reality. Main character Thomasina "Tee" Hodges has had more than her share of woe, yet the reader still gets the sense that she loves life, with all of its sharp highs and lows. As both an escapist instrument and an unpretentious reaffirmation of accentuating the positive, "What Doesn't Kill You: A Novel" is a new book to consider.
