Montreal Today

In spite of the fact that I was born and reared in Montreal, it is not a user friendly tourist destination”¦if you are English speaking. All signage is now strictly French (even though 50 percent of the residents are English), so getting around by car can be very difficult. One expects this in France but not just across the border in Canada. Tourist dollars come mostly from Canadians and Americans who speak English, which is now the international language. It would be more hospitable of Montreal to have direction signage in English as well as French to accommodate travelers bringing clean tourist industry dollars to a lovely old city in need of cleaning and a face lift.

When we arrived in our Avis rental car at our hotel of choice, Le Meridian, we had a tough time knowing where to park.... French signage. However, in the capable hands in the Le Meridian staff, we felt welcome, secure and very much at home in this charming exclusive boutique hotel.

Our wonderfully quiet room was spacious enough to accommodate all the amenities one would hope for and then some. Several suites even provide compact Pullman kitchens.

Security is primary and elevators operate only with room key cards.

Bronte, their highly rated restaurant/bar, offers a lovely breakfast buffet as well as excellent dining under the direction of Chef Joe Mecuri.

The softly modern Le Meridian has a sister hotel, Chateau Versailles, directly across the boulevard, entirely different in style and ambiance”¦very antique, very French.

We found Le Meridian to be the perfect comfort zone, wonderfully located on Sherbrooke street, in the midst of countless bistros, cafes, galleries, shops and a huge variety of multi-national restaurants serving dishes from the exotic to the sublime.

The Le Meridian staff is excellent, multi-lingual and eager to please. Paola Lopez, their charming manager, oversees operations with a gentle and loving touch, which makes Le Meridian in Montreal a true find in the hospitality business.
