LOS ANGELES—The Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) 1-CUP charity project, aimed at helping disadvantaged youth in Hollenbeck, is in full swing. Located a few miles southeast of Downtown LA, the Hollenbeck Police, specifically the station’s Police Activities League (PAL), are raising money to offset a major loss of funding. “We lost a huge contract in our area,” PAL spokeswoman Lorraine Garcia told Canyon News. “We had to up with a way to sustain ourselves.”
By donating just $5 a week for a year (a $240 annual donation), you can sponsor a child, providing him with positive alternatives to truancy, delinquency, or gang affiliation for a year. The Hollenbeck PAL’s website clearly states premise behind the donations: “For the cost of one cup of premium coffee per week, you can sponsor a child and provide him or her with positive alternatives.” The program aims to support 1,000 children this year, offering sports and recreational activities, leadership and educational programs, and a mentor to guide them towards the right path while steering them away from illegal alternatives.
Several celebrities have rallied behind the cause, notably actors Edward James Olmos and Ed Begley Jr., E! News correspondent Ken Baker, and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck. Garcia told Canyon News the 1-CUP project with release PSA type videos from celebrities and other prominent figures. Thirty second spots will appear on several local stations, namely Channels 2, 4, and 7.
Donations can be made in monthly increments or as a one-time donation. Visit www.1-cup.org to donate, set up a fundraising team, watch the brief videos, and learn more about the program.
