BEVERLY HILLS—Last month actor, bestselling author and famed local painter Thom Bierdz announced the winners of the 2011 American Art Awards. Since arriving in Hollywood, Bierdz has worked hard to reach all of his goals and enjoy the American dream, and thus he is constantly trying to promote other people and their talents. This week we take a look at one of the AAA winners, that President Bierdz is promoting. Artist Johnny Nicoloro won in several categories. I spoke with the local artist this week to discuss what the honor meant to him and to learn more about his artwork.
The local L.A. museum Latino Museum of History, Art and Culture recently said of Nicoloro’s work, “The exhibit showcases works of native Angelino Johnny Nicoloro presenting double-exposed images of urban scenes fused with the grace and magic of the blessed Virgin Mary.” The museum recently acquired 9 of Johnny’s double-exposed photos for their permanent collection.
Q-Is this your first time competing in AAA?
A-“No, it’s my third time”
Q-What were your categories and what place did you win?
A-“In 2011, I won First Place (Photography manipulated- Landscape) , Sixth Place (Photography manipulated- Still Life); in 2010, it was First Place (Photography Animals), Second Place (Photography Human) and in 2009- Finalist (Photography Human)
Q-Will you be looking for ways to further your exposure within the art community?
A-“I am consistently exhibiting my photo-art. Currently, I have a 26 piece solo exhibition ‘Virgins of Los Angeles’ at The Latino Museum Of History, Art and Culture at 514 S. Spring St, Los Angeles which runs till January 2012.”

Q-What is your major goal regarding your work as an artist?
A-“My primary and continuous goal is to keep making art that inspires and fulfills.
My major dream goal is to (hang) in the MOMA, The LACMA ,The Tate Modern and The Pompidou Centre, that’s all. My immediate goal is to develop my note card line at www.VirginMaryNoteCards.comto include more products and to introduce the other aspects of my photo-art catalog to my product line.”
The American Art Awards is an annual international competition open to artists in 56 categories ranging from Art Brut to Realism. The event recognizes commercial talent in painting, photography and sculpture.
