L.A. Autumn Garden Party
Posted by Ivetta Babadjanian on Oct 3, 2012 - 1:13:58 PM

WESTWOOD—Garden enthusiasts who are in the midst of nurturing their own garden should eagerly attend the L.A. Autumn Garden Party, which will take place at the Grown Native Nursery in the Veterans Garden.

The 12-acre garden and nursery will be open to the public free of charge
from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on October 6 and 7 with a multitude of guest speakers and a large selection of California native plants.

"This is an event to celebrate the beginning of the fall planting season. It's different than what most people expect as they think spring is the best time for gardening. However, fall is the best gardening season due to the warm soil here," said Colleen Wheeler, Grow Native Nursery manager and Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden horticulturist
.

"Grow Native Nursery in the Veterans Garden Grow Native Nursery works with the VA Greater Los Angeles Health Care System to maximize veterans’ opportunities in the sustainable horticulture industry. Grow Native Nursery is a nonprofit retail nursery that helps support the conservation, education, horticulture and research efforts of Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden," states the event's official press release.

During the second-annual event, native plant experts will lecture on various techniques for gardening and will also hold a ten minute question-and-answer portion afterwards. Barbara Eisenstein, one of the horticulturists expected to speak during the event, will discuss how to nurture native plants and avoid killing them. Another speaker, Richard Hayden, will discuss water-wise landscapes as well as unique planting designs.

"We are also trying to kick off our educational program at the nursery. We’ll be offering two different workshops throughout the year and covering everything from landscaping with edibles to beekeeping," said Wheeler. "We are expanding what we do as far as our role in education and providing a resource for the community to learn the different principles such as landscaping and making use of food production."

Customers will also be able to shop from a wide variety of plants of which many are rare or difficult to find at this time around Southern California. "It really is the best time to get out in the yard and embrace our Southern California climate and this season," said Wheeler.

The Grow Native Nursery in the Veterans Garden is located at 100 Davis Avenue, Los Angeles 90049. For more information, call (424) 234-0481 or visit www.rsabg.org.
