BEVERLY HILLS—Last month actor, bestselling author and famed local painter Thom Bierdz announced the winners of the 2011 American Art Awards. Since arriving in Hollywood, Bierdz has worked hard to reach all of his goals and enjoy the American dream, and thus he is constantly trying to promote other people and their talents. This week we take a look at one of the AAA winners, that President Bierdz is promoting. Photographer Stephen Honicki won in several of the categories of the competition. I spoke with the accomplished photographer this week to discuss what the honor meant to him and to learn more about his craft.
Q-Is this your first time competing in AAA?
A-“Tommy, this is my first time competing in the American Art Awards, although I had heard about the competition in previous years from Thom Bierdz’s website while looking for information about his book, ‘Forgiving Troy’ and news about his return to his role on ‘The Young & the Restless.’
Q-What are your categories and what place did you win?
A-Manipulated Photography, Still life, First Place. The piece is called ‘There Were Times When He Could Make Me Smile From The Inside Out.” Also, Manipulated Photography, Human, Fourth Place. The piece is called ‘He Could Have No Expectations of Anyone But Himself.’ Both photographs are from my narrative series, (Between Heaven and Hell).”
Q-Will you be looking for ways to further your exposure within the art community?
A-“I am always looking for new venues to showcase my photographic series. Having my work accepted into juried exhibitions is always a great honor. Because of this competition (AAA), it has provided me the opportunity for over a dozen different galleries across the country to see my photographic work that more than likely would have not seen it otherwise. My hope is that at least one director from these established galleries will want to see more of my work and contact me about the possibly of exhibiting some of my work in their space.”
Q-What is your major goal regarding your work as an artist?
A-“I would like people to come away from viewing my work by making connections with the various personal relationships in their own lives. In my various series, I am showing the various aspects of a relationship whether they be emotional, physical, or spiritual. I am always grateful to be able to exhibit my photographs in the various venues that have chosen my work to be showcased. Also, that I can be true to myself and give my viewers a small personal glimpse into my real and imaginary worlds. Art can (and should) imitate life.”
Q-Do you have a website where people can see your artwork?
A-“ Yes, my photography website is located at www.stevehphotography.com”
