UNITED STATES—It is difficult to go shopping and find all the products you need with a label stating it has not been tested on animals. Cruelty Free Consumer provides the capability to buy a variety of quality products all at one place with the knowledge that everything is certified cruelty-free.
After watching a particularly traumatic news program on animal testing at a young age, Founder and CEO Julie Kirk made it her mission to be more aware and active when it came to animal welfare. After a series of life-changing events, Kirk became a vegetarian and so began a soul searching process.
It was not too long after that Kirk began to question the beauty products she was using and their alleged testament to not using animal testing. It became more and more cumbersome to find products that were completely cruelty-free, in addition to the fact that to find all the products she needed Kirk had to look in multiple places.
Thus came the launch of Cruelty Free Consumer in 2011. The website allows customers to buy all the products they need without the hassle of hunting for each separately in several stores. The company provides an assortment of products in the departments beauty, baby, home and pet. Each product provided by the company is certified non-cruelty by the Leaping Bunny Coalition. It is a certification that is not easy to obtain as products must follow through with a series of requirements, a list longer than that of PETA certified products.
"I just want to introduce these phenomenal products that are safe for both children and pets," said Kirk. "We are always adding more products as we started off with only 300 and have now reached 600."
Through her company, Kirk also hopes people will begin to pay closer attention to the products they buy. Instead of viewing graphic images as she did as a child, Kirk wants to bring attention to the necessity of cruelty-free merchandise through a more positive outlet.
Kirk continues to expand her company while giving back to a number of nonprofit organizations. "It is really rewarding to give back to nonprofits and bring awareness out to the communities," said Kirk.
