The Debate About O.J. Simpson's Book
Posted by Harriet Steinberg on Aug 31, 2007 - 10:42:20 AM

O.J. Simpson is in the news again. Last week, on CNN, Larry King interviewed Denise Brown, Nicole Brown’s sister. She was very adamant about the fact that the Goldman family, who obtained the rights to Simpson’s book, “If I did it,” wants to have it published.

“This book should not be published,” Denise Brown stated on the T.V. program. She was extremely angry. She said that the book is a manual to commit murder. Brown said she was shocked and horrified to learn that a literary agent for the Goldman family had reached a deal to publish the controversial book. She told her listeners that she couldn’t bear that her sister’s two children will have to be subjected to this step by step manual on how their mother and her friend, Ron Goldman, were murdered.

Both the Goldman family and Denise Brown have their reasons as to whether the book should be published or not.

Denise was crying and angry when she appeared on CNN. Her strong emotions were understandable. Her feelings were: why bring out the drama of two people who were murdered. One, being a sister who cared very much about her murdered sister, and the other, a father and sister, who loved Ron Goldman.

Fred Goldman, Ron Goldman’s father, originally did not want the book to be published. He agreed that it was a “How to book,” but after reading it, he decided it was “Just an indictment of what this man did.” Goldman does not plan to publish the book as Simpson wrote it, but would elaborate on the details of what happened and provide more background material.

Although the Brown family remain opposed to the publication, Goldman continues with his belief that this would show the readers that this was an indictment as to what OJ Simpson had really done.

According to one blog, “Goldman and Denise Brown will be on Oprah to talk about "If I Did it." “The Goldmans are behind the publication while Denise has publicly called for a boycott, so the show will be a debate. Am I the only one who doesn't care”?”

The interesting part about this whole story is that on the day Simpson was declared innocent, I remember the students at Valley College rushing out of their classrooms with a tremendous bang of hoorays. It shows that although Simpson was declared innocent in his trial, it's obvious that most people don't believe it, otherwise there would be an up rise regarding this "debate."
