CUBA GOODING believes the only way he was able to survive from ashes was his deep belief in himself and what he might contribute to the creative arts world. "I didn't run around feeling sorry for myself or blaming others for what I didn't have. I just worked damn hard to prepare myself for whatever challenge that might confront me. Dreaming is not bad at all, but it's work...hard work that makes the difference."

Have you ever wondered, what would happen if an actor plumped up for a role and then later couldn't shed those wanted (for theatrical purposes) pounds? Last week's column left me in just that dilemma, 30 pounds overweight, after fattening up to play a movie role.

Have you lost so much weight you leave certain old garments unworn to avoid having them drop around your ankles at an inopportune moment?
