Actress Lauren Bacall Dies At 89

HOLLYWOOD— Hollywood is mourning the lost of acting legend Lauren Bacall who passed away at the age of 89. The actress was found dead in her home on Tuesday, August 12, after suffering from a stroke.


The Humphrey Bogart Estate confirmed the death with the following statement on their Facebook page, “With deep sorrow for the magnitude of our loss, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall.”

Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske in 1924 in the Bronx, New York. She got her start as a teenage fashion model appearing on covers for Harpers Bazaar and Vogue. She got her start in acting in 1942, when she debuted on Broadway in “Johnny 2 X 4.” Bacall got the eye of director Howard Hawkes who cast her alongside Humphrey Bogart in 1944’s “To Have and Have Not.”

 

The actors had instant chemistry and established a relationship while working on the movie. She starred in films alongside Kirk Douglass, Henry Fonda and Marilyn Monroe. She captured two Tony awards for her work in “Applause” and “Woman of the Year.” She obtained her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1996’s “The Mirror Has Two Faces.” She received an honorary Academy Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2009.

 

Bacall married Bogart in 1945, and remained married until his death in 1957. During the marriage, Bacall and Bogart had two children, Stephen Bogart and Leslie Bogart. She later married Jason Robards in 1961, but later divorced in 1969. During her marriage with Robards, Bacall gave birth to Sam Robards.

 

The actress wrote two autobiographies during her career, Lauren Bacall by Myself (1978) and Now (1994). She recently appeared on the FOX comedy series “Family Guy” in 2014 portraying the voice of Evelyn.
