“Apes” Scare “The Purge” At Box-Office
Posted by LaDale Anderson on Jul 21, 2014 - 6:59:10 PM

HOLLYWOOD—Many box-office predictions expected the sequel “The Purge: Anarchy” to claim the top spot at the box-office this weekend, but “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” had other plans. The “Apes” grabbed the top spot for the second week in a row, bringing in around $36 million. After two weeks, the film has already crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box-office.

Landing in the #2 spot is “The Purge: Anarchy” with around $28 million. That’s slightly under the amount its predecessor grossed in 2013. That’s still a strong debut for an R-rated film. Next week’s box-office will determine what legs the thriller has with audiences.

"Sex Tape" failed to inspire audiences this past weekend.

Grabbing the #3 spot is the animated flick “Planes: Fire & Rescue” with a dismal $18 million. Many expected the film to debut to larger numbers considering there hasn’t been an animated flick in theaters for children for a few weeks.  Comedy wasn’t on the mind for many movie lovers as Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel’s “Sex Tape” failed to draw audiences with a salty $15 million. Rounding out the top five was “Transformers: Age of Extinction” which added another $10 million to its total. After nearly a month at the multiplex, the alien robots have grossed more than $227 million at the domestic box-office.

This weekend doesn’t see a major movie release, but a potential sleeper in the sci-fi action flick “Lucy” starring Scarlett Johansson and the action film “Hercules” starring ‘The Rock.’
