Posted by Luis Cuevas on Jul 8, 2013 - 2:42:55 PM

HOLLYWOOD—“Despicable Me 2” took top honors over the Fourth of July weekend at the box-office. The animated feature starring Steve Carell as a evil mastermind named Gru and his minions took the No. 1 spot with $142 million. Universal had previously estimated the film to gross $82.5 million, but the film far exceeded their expectations, becoming one of the highest grossing animated films.

“The Lone Ranger” starring Johnny Depp and Armie Harmer was a miss for Jerry Bruckheimer. The film made less than $50 million over the weekend, giving it the No. 2 spot. “The Heat”, the action comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, continued to do well at the box office coming in at No. 3 with $25 million. “ Monsters University,” the animated prequel came in at No. 4 with $19.5 million. “World War Z” starring Brad Pitt went on to grab the No. 5 spot with $18.2 million.

This weekend sees the release of Guillermo Del Toro’s highly anticipated robot epic “ Pacific Rim” starring Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba. “Grown Ups 2” starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade and Chris Rock also hits the movie theatres. The indie release, “Fruitvale Station” starring Michael B. Jordan will also be released this weekend. The film took the grand jury prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
