Director David R. Ellis Dead At 60

HOLLYWOOD—The entertainment industry is mourning the lost of director David R. Ellis, who passed away on Monday, January 7. He was found dead inside his hotel room. The director was preparing to work on his latest project in Johannesburg, South Africa, “Kite,” an adaptation of a Japanese anime picture.  Actor Samuel L. Jackson was attached to star in the movie. Jackson and Ellis collaborated on the 2006 picture “Snakes on a Plane.”

Jackson released the following statement from his Twitter account on Monday in response to the director’s death: "So sad to hear of David R Ellis passing! So talented, so kind, such a Good Friend. He'll be missed. Gone too soon!"

 

The director played a big role in the “Final Destination” franchise, as he helmed 2003’s “Final Destination 2” as well as directed the 3D installment “The Final Destination” in 2009. He also directed the picture “Cellular” which starred Chris Evans and Kim Bassinger.

 

Ellis was born on September 8, 1952, in Hollywood, California, and got his start in the industry as a stuntman in pictures like “Patriot Games” and “Days of Thunder.”  He also worked as a stunt coordinator and assistant director collaborating with pictures like “The Matrix Revolutions” and “Harry Potter.”  His last directorial debut was the horror flick “Shark Night 3D” which was released in 2011.   

 

Authorities have not yet released an official cause of death for the director.
