Posted by Luis Cuevas on Aug 19, 2013 - 11:35:09 AM

HOLLYWOOD—“Lee Daniels’ The Butler” took the top spot over this weekend’s box office with more than $25 million. The Weinstein Company picture starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey did a lot better than expected with the release of so many films this past weekend.

The Jennifer Aniston comedy “We’re The Millers” took the No. 2 spot with $17.8 million. Neil Blomkamp’s action film “Elysium” starring Matt Damon took the No. 3 spot with $13.6 million. The much-anticipated dark action sequel “Kick Ass 2” failed to find an audience, bringing in $13.6 million to take the No. 4 spot. Disney’s "Planes” took the No. 5 spot with $13.1 million.

This coming week brings a lot of new movies including the third installment of Edgar Wright directed comedies “The World’s End” starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, “The Frozen Ground” starring Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, Vanessa Hudgens and 50 Cent, and “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” based on the popular book series starring Lily Collins. Limited releases include the home-invasion horror film “You’re Next” and “Drinking Buddies” starring Olivia Wilde.
