“Les Misérables,” “Argo” Golden Globe Winners

BEVERLY HILLS— Hollywood was out in full-force on Sunday, January 13 as the 70^th Annual Golden Globes were held at the famed Beverly Hilton Hotel.  The big winner of the night was the picture “Les Misérables” with a total of 3 wins including Best Comedy or Musical. “Argo” was followed closed behind with 2 wins including Best Motion Picture-Drama.  The musical is definitely looking like a big contender in the Oscar race for Best Picture alongside “Argo,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Lincoln.”  At the moment it looks like the Oscar for Best Picture is duel between “Argo” and “Les Misérables.”  “Django Unchained” also picked up two awards during the night.

The hosts of the evening, funny ladies Tina Fey and Amy Poehler did not disappoint when it came to laughs.  They opened the show with jokes about the industry comparing the film industry with the television industry. They even took jabs at previous host Ricky Gervais who hit below the belt the last two times he hosted the ceremony. 

Poehler took a low blow at Kathryn Bigelow’s ex-husband James Cameron in a gasping moment in the show, but it was quite funny to say the least. Fey even took jabs at Anne Hathaway for her hosting duties at the Academy Awards. Both ladies even immersed their personas in some of the categories for the night, which were quite funny. Poehler and Fey even took a jab at the dating life of Taylor Swift.

Jessica Chastain won for Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama for "Zero Dark Thirty."

Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama was awarded to Jessica Chastain “Zero Dark Thirty” who is indeed the woman to beat this awards season with Critics Choice and Golden Globe wins, she’s a force to be reckoned with.  Chastain was absolutely emotional while on stage accepting her award, thanking her grandmother as well as director Kathryn Bigelow for her skilled work behind the camera. Best Actor in a Motion-Picture Drama was awarded to Daniel Day-Lewis for his work in “ Lincoln.”

For Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture the award went to Christoph Waltz for “Django Unchained.”  What a way to start off the show.  While many predicted a win for Tommy Lee Jones for “ Lincoln” it just shows this race is all over the place this awards season.

Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television went to Maggie Smith “Downtown Abbey.” The winner for Best Mini-Series or TV Movie went to “Game Change.”  Best Actress in a Mini-Series and TV Movie went to the sensational Julianne Moore for “Game Change.”  Actor in a TV Drama went to Damian Lewis “Homeland.”   There was an awkward moment on stage between presenters Paul Rudd and Salma Hayek for the Golden Globe for Best TV Drama to “Homeland.” 

Best Original Score was given to Mychael Danna “Life of Pi.” The award for Best Original Song went to Adele for “Skyfall.”  “Oh, my God,” shouted out an esteemed Adele while accepting her award on stage.  Actor in a TV Movie or Mini-Series was delivered to Kevin Costner “Hatfields and McCoys.” Former President Bill Clinton received an astounding ovation from the crowd as he presented Best Motion Picture nominee “Lincoln.”

In a hilarious moment between presenters Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy gave shout outs to all of the nominees that had the room in tears.  In the end, a very humble Jennifer Lawrence showed true emotion while accepting the award for her work in “Silver Linings Playbook.” Lawrence joked that she defeated Meryl Streep.

The award for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television went to Ed Harris “Game Change.” For Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture the award went to a well deserved Anne Hathaway for “Les Misérables” who was engulfed in tears as she accepted her award on stage.   She did an iconic tribute to the esteemed Sally Field for paving the way for actresses in cinema.

Best Screenplay was awarded to Quentin Tarantino “Django Unchained” who received an uproarious applause from the crowd with his win.  He was very animated while accepting his award on stage to discuss his screenwriting process.

The winner for Actor in a Comedy Series was awarded to Don Cheadle “House of Lies,” who was quite stunned with his win.  He thanked his cast and crew while on the stage. In the competitive category for Actress in a TV Drama the winner was Claire Danes “Homeland.” Best Animated Feature was a victory for “Brave.” The award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series went to Lena Dunham “Girls.”  A bit of an upset for both Tina Fey and Amy Poehler who were both hoping to get on the stage.

Robert Downey Jr. presented the Cecil B. Demille award to actress Jodie Foster who thanked her field of colleagues. She made an uproarious moment that had everyone guessing just what announcement she might be making, but it was a joke about her dating life.  She made a declaration about privacy in the public sphere. She made a heartfelt moment to her mother in the final moments of her speech that moved the audience. Indeed one of the most powerful speeches from one of the best actresses in the industry.

In the competitive field for Best Director the award went to Ben Affleck “Argo.”  Who received a well deserved standing ovation from the crowd, it looks like he deserves an Oscar, and he might get it; the accolades that he is receiving now are incredible.  Affleck praised the other nominees in the category that he has looked up to. 

For Best TV Series Comedy or Musical the Golden Globe went to “Girls,” as an emotional Dunham expressed her gratitude while accepting the award on behalf of her cast and crew. The Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical went to Hugh Jackman for “Les Misérables,” edging out Bradley Cooper for “Silver Linings Playbook.”

Poehler and Fey did exceptional work as hosts of the 70^th Golden Globes; they pushed the envelope, but not too much.  With the Golden Globes behind us the next big awards show is the Screen Actors Guild Awards taking place on Sunday, January 27.  Don’t miss it!
