HOLLYWOOD—Warner Bros. latest attempt to revitalize the Superman movie franchise seems to be the most successful effort since the Christopher Reeves "Superman" series in the seventies and eighties. On opening weekend “Man of Steel,” starring Henry Cavill as Superman, made $125 million over the weekend including Thursday night corporate screenings.

The film made $113 million over the traditional box-office weekend, breaking a box-office record for June. The previous record was held by "Toy Story 3" which made $110 million on its opening weekend in June 2010.
“Man of Steel” cost $225 million dollars to make, but is expected to recoup the costs easily due to its apparent popularity. Including international sales, Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” has made $197 million so far.
The new Superman reboot was directed by Zack Snyder, director of “Watchmen” and “300,” and produced by Christopher Nolan, director of the “Dark Knight” trilogy and “Inception.” It has a darker, more brooding nature than the previous installments and is Warner Bros. attempt to build a DC franchise to compete with Marvel.
While the film has received mixed reviews from critics, the box office numbers have made it a success in the production company’s eyes and plans for a sequel are already in the works.
