“Side Effects” Is A Compelling, Twisted Thriller

HOLLYWOOD—Have you been dying to see a good thriller? I know I have, one with well-rounded characters, one with a twisty plot full of surprises and an ending to blow your socks off? Well look no further because “Side Effects” is that picture. The thriller stars Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum as a married couple who appear to have it all, but all is not as it seems. This picture will keep you on the edge of your seat until its final moments.
Finally it’s a movie for grown ups, with great acting from both Mara (Emily) and Law (Dr. Jonathan Banks). The premise revolves around Mara’s character Emily who is grappling with an anxiety disorder after her husband Martin (Channing Tatum) is released from prison. To battle that disorder Emily has been visiting psychiatrist Jonathan Banks who prescribes a drug called Ablixa to treat her disorder.
Upon taking the medication our protagonist wakes up to find a dead body in her home, not aware of just what has taken place. The rest of the movie becomes a suspense-filled who dun it and why? Banks finds himself at the mercy of scrutiny for prescribing the medication to his patient and the effects it has on her; but could this all be a part of Emily’s plan to get away with murder or is she an innocent bystander.
Director Steven Soderbergh easily weaves a tantalizing tale of intrigue thanks to a clever script by writer Scott Z. Burns. Catherine Zeta-Jones also shows up in the movie as Dr. Victoria Siebert, a colleague of Banks. The actress previously worked with Soderbergh in the movies “Traffic” and “Ocean’s Twelve.”
The movie effectively places suspicion on all the primary players; a certainty is not known until the movie ends and that’s the sign of a good mystery. Clues are given throughout and even after the big reveal your socks are still knocked off. It’s a movie that reminds me of “Inception,” “The Ring” and “The Usual Suspects;” you have to watch the picture a second, even a third time to see how all the pieces add up. “Side Effects” is one of the most exhilarating pictures so far for 2013.
