HOLLYWOOD—“The Avengers” was the movie that dominated 2012, and it also dominated the 2013 MTV Movie Awards taking home three prizes including Movie of the Year. That honor was presented by A-list celeb Brad Pitt. “Pitch Perfect” star Rebel Wilson had a ball of a time playing hostess to the event. The actress/comedian didn’t disappoint as she took jabs at a sleuth of celebrities.
Melissa McCarthy presented the award for Best Male Performance to Bradley Cooper “Silver Linings Playbook.” Cooper thanked his co-star Jennifer Lawrence as well as director David O. Russell while on stage.
The award for Best Fight went to Marvels “The Avengers.” Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston and Joss Whedon took the stage to accept the golden popcorn. Hiddleston returned to the stage to accept for Best Villain, in an acceptance speech that was a long rant in my opinion. Emma Watson was given the trailblazer award, which I found a bit daunting considering her short repertoire of pictures; but she does appear to be paving a new career hence, the “Harry Potter” flicks. The actress was extremely gracious while accepting her award on stage. It was indeed a heartfelt speech as she talked about her time being teased for being different, a bit inspiring to say the least.
Will Ferrell was presented the comedic genius award by “Games of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage. His hilarious bit went on a bit too long some would say, but I will admit Ferrell bring his “family” onstage was quite funny. The cast of “Fast and Furious 6” presented the award for Breakthrough Performance to hostess Rebel Wilson, who was deserving of the prize. It did appear that she was losing some of that energy as the ceremony progressed.
Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Danny McBride presented the award for Best Shirtless Performance. It was a bit that was not really funny at all, but the actors did indeed try to get the audience laughing, but it wasn’t really going anywhere. Taylor Lautner from “Twilght” took home the prize. He poked fun at himself coming to the stage wearing a fat suit and emptying loads of snacks from his pocket. Once again, another unfunny moment at the ceremony that was so awkward to watch. There is a difference between being funny and trying to be funny.
Kerry Washington presented co-star Jamie Foxx with the Generation Award. Foxx thanked countless directors that he worked with, alongside actors who he’s shared the screen with. “Catching Fire” star Liam Hemsworth presented the audience with the teaser trailer to the new picture which audiences have been eagerly awaiting. I must say the movie does indeed look promising; I was wondering how the sequel would size up to its predecessor. I must say this will be a must-see come November.
The cast of “Pitch Perfect” took home the award for Best Musical Moment. I did find the ceremony to be one of the most unwatchable award shows all season. There just seemed to be so many awkward moments that you couldn’t help, but want to change the channel. This wasn’t a comedy show, it was a movie awards show, but everyone wanted to be comedians who really aren’t comedians.
