"The Purge" Tops Weekend Box Office

HOLLYWOOD—“The Purge” beat out the competition and took the No. 1 spot in this weekend’s box office. It earned $36.4 million from 2,536 movie theaters.

The thriller averaged a strong $14,345 per theater. “The Purge” was written and directed by James DeMonaco, the film stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. It was made for only $3 million and had a great marketing campaign and premise that gave it a big opening.

 

“Fast & Furious 6” took the no. 2 spot, with $19.8 million in its third weekend. “Now You See Me” took the no. 3 spot with $19.5 million. “The Internship” starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn fell below expectations bringing in $18 million for the no. 4 spot. The animated action adventure “Epic” took the no. 5 spot with $12.1 million.

 

This weekend two of summers most anticipated films “This Is The End,” a comedy directed by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen starring James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson arrives at the multiplex. “Man Of Steel” brings Superman back to the big screen. The picture is directed by Zack Snyder and written by David Goyer, and stars Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
