Dinner At Eight
Posted by Margaret Blanc on May 1, 2002 - 11:57:00 AM

Billed as a "riotous comedy," the 1933 film "Dinner at Eight" gives an inside look into the lives of the Park Avenue elite during the depression, but falls short in laughs.

The movie centers on Oliver Jordan (Lionel Barrymore), who has built his fortune in the shipping business. His wife Millicent (Billie Burke) decides to throw a party in honor of some visiting English friends. In developing her guest list, we meet our other characters, who are all tightly woven in a tapestry of deceit. Everyone seems to have a secret to hide.

A slew of MGM stars complete the cast: John Barrymore, Marie Dressler, Jean Harlow and Edmund Lowe. Watch and decide for yourself whether "Dinner at Eight" tickles your funny bone, or rather saddens you with its microscopic view of High Society. Dinner is served.
