HOLLYWOOD—I remember watching "Adam's Rib" as a young teenager, and enjoying it immensely. My husband and I rented it recently and it was interesting to look at it from an adult perspective.
This comedy stars Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy as husband and wife. They are both lawyers; he is a district attorney, and she is a defense lawyer. A case involving a wife (played by Judy Holliday) who attempted to murder her cheating husband comes to the forefront in their lives. Tracy believes that the law is the law and Hepburn believes that because it involves a woman as the shooter, people look at it differently. This battle of the sexes heats up in the courtroom as well as at home for this bickering duo.
The chemistry between them is palpable, and quite enjoyable to watch. Hepburn is at her best, and the only thing better than her performance, is the finesse with which Holliday plays the "dipsy blonde," a truly great comedic performance. The movie slows a little after the trial ends, but has a great message for today's divorce-ridden society.
