An Open Letter to Karen Grassle
Mar 5, 2006 - 9:36:00 PM

Dear Canyon News,

I have just come across your Web Page in my search for someone who can help me trace the very special lady who saved me from the brink of suicide many years ago.

I'm 46 now but back in the mid 70's I lived in a home where my father physically and mentally abused my mother and mentally tortured me. As the youngest child and the only one left at home, I had no one to turn to and suicidal thoughts were never very far from my mind. Out of sheer desperation I put pen to paper and poured my heart out to Karen Grassle of Little House on the Prairie fame. It was at a time when Little House was at the peak of its success and to be honest I didn't really expect to hear anything back. A few weeks later though I received a personal reply from Ms. Grassle, asking how I was and telling me to keep in touch. The next letter I received from her gave me the contact address for Erin Pizzey's office here in Britain.  Erin was one of the first people on this side of the Atlantic to set up safe homes for battered women and, as I was to find out much later, Karen Grassle was also a campaigner for the rights of abused women.

I finally plucked up the courage, as I was fearful for my safety and that of my mum's, and got in touch with Erin Pizzey's office. They gave me the number of a group here in Northern Ireland which was set up to help children like myself and it was to be the best thing I'd ever done in my short life.  The help and support they gave me turned my life around, although it was a long and slow process.

I kept in contact with Ms. Grassle for some time but then lost touch when she moved. I'm now a happily married mother of two beautiful children and it was only recently, when my daughter was learning about the different kinds of abuse we humans inflict on each other, that I suddenly realized that, but for the grace of God AND Karen Grassle, I don't even know if I'd be here today to tell my story. This is one very special lady who I want to thank from the bottom of my heart, but that's where I've drawn a blank. I have been trying to get a contact address for her but so far without success. The last I know, she was living in Pacific Palisades with her daughter Lily. To be honest I don't even know if she is still in the entertainment industry but I feel duty-bound to find her and am hoping your readers may be able to

If any of you out there know where I can get in touch with Karen, please please get in contact with me. Likewise, if anyone can pass on my details to her I would be forever in your debt. I do not mean to intrude on this lady's privacy but I have an unexplainable urge to speak to this very special person who saved me from despair, and thank her from the bottom of my heart.

If only the world were full of Karen Grassles what a better place it would be for us all.

Thank you for your time.
