SAN FRANCISCOWrenches may be thrown in many travel plans this weekend, as the Bay Bridge will be closed through Labor Day because of work on the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel.

“This closure will take place on August 31 at 8:00 p.m. and will last until 5:00 a.m. on September 4,” said Bart Ney, a Caltrans spokesman. “It will allow construction crews to demolish and rebuild the westbound viaduct connecting the eastern span to the Yerba Buena Island tunnel.”

This weekend’s closure will be the first since its initial closing in October of 1989 after the Loma Prieta earthquake, in which it was closed for 30 days. Caltrans, along with the construction crews, are anticipating Labor Day weekend to be light in terms of bridge traffic, but if you are planning to travel, they advise you to begin looking for alternative routes early.

“Plan to use other bridges in the Bay Area or use an alternate form of transportation, such as BART, which will be running overnight service to selected stations,” Ney said. “Ferry services are also going to be increased.”

The Bay Bridge, one of the busiest in the world, carrying between 250,000 and 300,000 vehicles each day, will have another large closure sometime in late 2008 or early 2009. “The work we are doing is to make the bridge more seismically safe. The construction is on schedule and it should be complete by 2013,” Ney said.
