SHERMAN OAKSThe goal of keeping art programs has proved important to the students at Dixie Canyon Elementary School, who will be holding the fourth annual Fall Designer Boutique on November 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will feature vendors will be sales items such as:

  • Hangbags
  • Kids stuff
  • Clothing
  • Jewelry
  • Candy

All the proceeds raised will benefit the Dixie Canyon PTA which will use the money to buy computers and help educate the public on the importance of the arts.

Last year’s event raised $100,000 and had 30 vendors. In the previous three years, the event has been held in a parent’s home or at a church. This is the first year that the event will be held at Dixie Canyon where 650 students attend.

Former PTA President Lisa Jell, who has participated from the beginning, says that for this year’s event there will be at least 50 vendors.

“The money will be used not only for the arts program, but also for student assemblies and field trips.” she said.

The community gets involved and donates its time to this event, showing that there are families who can afford to put their children in a educational program. This is one way for those families to have their child in an arts program.

Officials from the Los Angeles Unified School District recently announced program cuts in its schools on September 30, and to have this fundraising event Jell said is where an event like this comes in.

Jell says that there is a reason why art programs are essential to a child’s education. “In having the arts program for the students what is does is making the student a well-rounded person. It takes away the boring aspect of an education because getting an education is not just about attending a class of math or any other course."
