I Take This Person To Be My Wedded Spouse
Posted by Sean McConnor on Aug 24, 2008 - 7:25:38 AM

If you are a believer in Judeo-Christian principles, you believe the Bible when it says, God created man in his own image and, then, he created woman. In other words, God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve, to populate the earth. On the other hand,  religions preach to be tolerant of people who are different, so
if you are presumably straight or gay, you  should show love to the other group.

Apparently, the straight people haven't been exactly "loving" toward gay people in a number of instances such as gays in the military, etc. Our government tried to equal the playing field by passing some federal laws such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Age Discrimination Act of 1967, to ban all forms of harassment and discrimination against all peoples regardless of sex, race, sexual orientation, religion, etc., but, as you know, passing a law doesn't always solve the problem. For example, there are jay-walking laws all over Canyon News country, but, people walk all over the streets like they are sidewalks and disregard the speeding vehicles.

Anyway, the California Supreme Court, by a 4 to 3 vote, decided that the marriage laws in California discriminate against gay people by not allowing same-sex couples to get married like straight ones. Boy, did that stir up a hornet's nest! (As of this writing, the Court just ruled that doctors cannot discriminate against gays even if the treatment conflicts with religious beliefs. Get ready for some fall-out on this one, too.)

The people who oppose same-sex marriages have responded with a measure that will be on the November election ballot (Prop 8) that seeks to eliminate gay marriage. As of this writing, too, the television ad war has begun between the two groups. Things are going to get nasty before they get nicer, folks.

What do I think? I believe in gay civil unions guaranteeing same-sex people the same legal rights as a partnership. (Most gay people I know refer to their "significant others" as partners.) Depending on the religion, it is up to them, if they want to certify the union as religious. However, I think it is a misnomer to label it a "marriage" and religions shouldn't be forced or legally required to perform these unions.

Marriage has signified the union between a man and a woman who have decided to move in together, work together for common goals, and have sex and children. The state and the church have recognized and perpetuated the institution of marriage between a man and a woman as something sacred and necessary for preservation of the state and the rules of man and of God.

Society has survived the partnerships of men/men and women/women, but society will not be able to survive without the stability and legality of the family through the institution we call marriage and have called marriage for thousands of years.
