UNITED STATES—Senator Tom Coburn did an audit of federal agencies and found an unacceptable level of absences. Since 2001, federal employees have been absent without leave for almost 20 million hours.
CALIFORNIA—Since California legalized gay marriage, the people who oppose same-sex marriages have responded with a measure that will be on the November ballot(Prop 8) that seeks to eliminate gay marriage.
VARIOUS—Some of us are renters and others are homeowners. Still others have been both, so they know a lot about repairs. Nevertheless, there are a few things you knew to be aware of when you can Mr. or Ms. Fix-it.
LOS ANGELES—The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and the L.A. Unified School District (LAUSD) will have billion dollar measures on the November ballot along with some state bond measures.
VARIOUS—In the summer of 1914, a generation of peace and the first World War began which altered the lives of the planet forever. Despite all the pretentious titles, those who are in charge are no wiser than you and I.
UNITED STATES—The oil industry comes up with a lot of excuses and rationales for the current gas crisis. It ultimately boils down to, in my opinion, that they don't really care about us consumers.
UNITED STATES—Mailer's definition of a hero is not applicable to any individual in this time, financially and militarily, in our national life. Instead, the term could be applied to the American people.
UNITED STATES—In November, we will elect the next president. However it turns out, it will be a first: the first African-American or the oldest man ever elected. We might have the first female vice president, too.
UNITED STATES—A woman who is a big shot in a federal job was speaking with some members of Congress the other day. She was reprimanding them about all the advantages they have given federal employees.
UNITED STATES—I have often thought of the young Marine and that day at Camp Pendleton Marine Base. Independance Day is more than beer, hot dogs, and fireworks. It is about reflecting on freedom.
VARIOUS—I don't know if you have ever passed the VA Hospital in West Los Angeles. Chances are if you live on the West Side you have passed the big white building with "West Los Angeles VA Medical Center" on the front.
VARIOUS—Things are really stressful these days with high gas prices, the economy slowing down, foreclosures rising, and the war in Iraq. It is enough to keep you from sleeping, which is the worst thing for you!

Come July 1, the California Wireless Telephone Safety Act of 2006 takes effect,
targeting "motor mouths" who use cell phones while driving in
California.
VARIOUS—The mortgage crisis is turning neighborhoods into ghost towns. There isn’t a block in the neighborhood that doesn't have a house for sale or a house that the owner has walked away from. The tragedy is real.
UNITED STATES—Who is going to help the new President in January run the country is especially pertinent now that the presumptive party nominees will be selecting someone soon to run with them as their VP candidate.
VARIOUS—If one believes the mainstream media, there are preponderance of sexual
predators out and about these days. Some things are difficult to write about
and writing this column is tough.
UNITED STATES—There was a time in America when people were being taxed to death and
forced to pay fees and increased prices all the time. Hence, the
expression, "nickel and dimed to death" came into being.
CALIFORNIA—Get ready for fireworks! The heads of the UC, CSU and CaliforniaCommunity College systems led a rally in Sacramento to protest the proposed budget cuts to their institutions.
UNITED STATES—The Supreme Court has issued two major decisions on the death penalty. The moratorium on executions has been lifted and the condemned throughout the nation may see their sentences carried out.
VARIOUS—On a daily basis, the price of fuel for our cars goes up. What can we do? A gentleman I know recently told me the story of his trip to
Los Angeles from his home in 1966 to see a friend. He was driving an old VW Bug.
