WASHINGTON, D.C.—From Richard Nixon to Thomas Jefferson, the nation has seen political scandals throughout the centuries. Most of them have been sex scandals, but what makes New York Congressman Anthony Weiner’s sex scandal different from other past scandals, is that political supporters and famous television psychologists fill the airways with excuse after excuse. It all leads up to two words: sexual addiction. Really? Weiner is addicted to sex? Perhaps a more constructive and honest definition or diagnosis would be to call him a typical megalomaniac politician who believes he’s above and smarter than the rest of us.

Democrats call republican politicians hypocrites, liars and power-hungry maniacs whenever the republicans get caught in sexual scandals. Congressman David Vitter (R-La.) was listed in the D.C. Madam’s address book, and Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct after being caught in a restroom at a Minneapolis airport allegedly trying to pick up a guy in the stall next to him. Even former President Bill Clinton and current presidential candidate Newt Gingrich both were caught up in their own sex scandals in the 1990s. Perhaps what separates the republican politicians and brings more attention to their behavior is the fact that they claim moral purity and run for office as family-value candidates, while playing the same sexual and political games as every other politician.
Despite the lack of arguments on behalf of social dogma, Weiner still should be ashamed of himself just the same. He is just a newlywed who has been married to a brilliant and beautiful Washington insider and aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. To Mrs. Weiner’s credit, unlike many of the other political wives, she did not stand by her husband’s side during his embarrassing press conference on Monday afternoon. She smartly stayed out of the public eye and seems to be dealing with her embarrassment privately.

What Weiner should be called on the carpet for, before being run out of office by his own constituents in New York City, is that for many years he has held himself as a beacon, supporter and advocate for his left-wing arguments. Perhaps he was right sometimes, and wrong on other occasions. However, he never showed any humility, he never showed any respect for his political adversaries and he even called former President George Walker Bush some of the most unkind and unthinkable names during his two terms in office. For those reasons alone, he should not request or expect any American to be more respectful of his current situation, which is of his own making.
He on many occasions on the floor of the House of Representatives vilified republican leaders, who had just as much right to fight for their constituents’ beliefs as much as Weiner fought and believed in his own constituents. He would often demean people publicly, especially since he was a media darling who often went on CNN, FOX and MSNBC news channels to castigate and belittle anyone who disagreed with his stance on any issue. Yes, the political right has engaged in the same behavior, especially since their unseemly bigoted attacks on President Obama were unleashed over two years ago. So there currently is absolutely no moral authority or dignity or respect on either side of the political aisle.
That being said, Weiner is now the butt of jokes of not only late night comics, but the average American who finds his behavior juvenile, tawdry and disgusting at its best. His tweeting of pictures of his penis and his chest as well as his admission that he lied to the American people over the past two weeks about his inappropriate tweeting and communications with young women over the past two years, at the very least leaves him in no position to engage Americans or his own constituents in the many necessary debates our nation must face from the federal debt ceiling, to healthcare and national security.
Should he be impeached? That’s up to the House Ethics Committee, which we all know will not conclude any investigation for at least two to five years. Isn’t it amazing how Washington, D.C. politicians have more loopholes than the tax system for their bad behavior and any recourse the American people can take against them comes only every few years at the ballot box. Perhaps New Yorkers will find someone suitable, ethical and honest enough to replace a man who is none of those things.
Please pray for our brave troops who fight on the frontlines of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
