Celebration Theater Perform Theatrical Magic
Posted by Michael St John on Oct 7, 2012 - 11:33:01 AM

HELLO AMERICA! Because I will always have a passion for the theatre, it is very special when I hear that a new playwright and his or her play is actually being produced.  The Celebration Theater is doing just that as a workshop production. The curtains will go up on Steve Harper’s play, October 30, November 6, 13,20 at 8 p.m.
Being featured in the cast are: Ira Gold, Christina Marie Moses, Jason Turner, Charls Hall, Sabina Zuniga Varela, Laura Parker

The play features Grayson, an unemployed attorney, who struggles against an overwhelming depression due to the death of her father, and the fact that her brother is in a coma. Even her girlfriend Angie and therapy don’t seem to be providing the cure. She sees her father everywhere and talks to her comatose brother (and he talks back) constructing a history of her family that has elements of myth and reality in an unsuccessful effort to break out of her mood. After running into Sheri ”“her ex from Law School - now married and straight, Grayson decides to pursue Sheri in the hopes of getting a kiss she knows will magically make things right. In this comedy/drama about family, power, slavery and freedom, Grayson negotiates love, mysticism, and history in pursuit of her own mental health.
Playwright Steve Harper’s work has been seen at The Falcon Theatre, Tribeca Theatre Festival, Chicago’s American Theatre Company, and The American Airlines Theatre. He’s a graduate of the Juilliard playwriting program and writes for the TV show Covert Affairs.
L.A. Weekly and Broadway World Award winner Thomas James O'Leary, who starred in Celebration's acclaimed production of Take Me Out, directs this workshop production.
The Escape Artist’s Children has been developed by New York Theatre Workshop, New York Stage & Film and was a winner of NY’s New Professional Theatre Writer’s Festival in 2009. The C.T. Tuesdays workshop production marks the next stage of development for the play. This is a minimalist production using a short rehearsal process focusing on the script. A post-show discussion follows each performance.
Celebration Theatre is a company of artists dedicated to presenting innovative, provocative and relevant work that examines the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer experience. John Michael Beck, Artistic Director
