Michael Douglas Discovers His Other Side

HOLLYWOOD—HELLO AMERICA! When asking MICHAEL DOUGLAS why he consented to playing “Liberace” in the film based on the musician’s life, he didn’t hesitate to say, “Because I’m an actor and it would give me another opportunity to grow.”
Douglas also explained that he had grown up listening to the very colorful musician. He even met and watched him perform several times in Las Vegas. “When talking with Libby,” he said, “it was like talking to an old friend. There was always that magic smile and his way of talking that was like butter, smooth and soft. He was a gentle man, a deeply caring man. ”I have never played a character that allowed me to deal with the feminine side of who I am. Playing Liberace is a big challenge, but exciting. It’s like discovering another world, one I’ve always been curious about but never had the chance of actually facing it as an actor.”
The actor couldn’t help but explode with laughter when asked how it is having MATT DAMON play his lover? “Oh, a guy couldn’t have a better lover. He’s sexy and tempting.” Douglasquickly noted that Matt is a tremendous actor, who goes right to the center of any character he plays. “I understand why he has so many fans,” the actor offered. “You can’t take your eyes off of him no matter what he does. Man! That’s a gift. I feel very lucky to work with him, even though he does have an insane side, too. He likes playing jokes, so I have to keep my eyes open at every turn – but it’s fun.”
Douglas acknowledged that he has a different appreciation of life after his cancer scare. “You know one takes things for granted when there are so many beautiful things you’re blessed to have on a daily basis. I am so lucky to be alive, to be able to put my arms around my beautiful family.” Asking about his relationship with daddy “Kirk” he became very
quiet, as if fighting back tears. “He’s an amazing man,” he said. “Nothing stops him. He gets up in the morning ready to conquer the world and it’s amazing because he does. Dad doesn’t think about the past, only the moment, and it works for him. Even when he suffered the stroke, with it producing physical limitations, he did a one man show. And the audience fell in love with him all over again. What a guy my dad is!”
So what other plans does Michael have as an actor? “Oh, I really don’t think about that very much. I just take each day as it comes, and being thankful that I’m able to even do that.”
