For Our Troops

UNITED STATES — As some of you may or may not know, I haven't been writing a regular column anymore since I'm becoming so busy as Canyon News Editor. In the "Back To Day Care" article I'm posting this month, I wanted to revisit an old article, but an important one, because of an email I received.  However, what I want to do here is more important.

It has come to my attention that a radio station in Wisconsin has started a "grassroots" petition to support the troops.  This is in response to the anti-war protests and petitions we have seen covered over and over by the media.  I wanted to give a few of my thoughts and share how you can sign the "In Our Name" petition.

I have a hard time believing that anyone is pro-war. I truly think that Bush and his administration want to use force as a last resort in regards to Sadaam Hussein. I personally have mixed feelings over what should be done.  I have philosophical hang-ups with attacking a country and most likely killing innocent people and risking our own people (whether it be the troops or civilians who become the target of retribution in a terrorist attack) in the meantime. However, I do see the need to get rid of Hussein. So I don't know what the answer is, nor do I pretend to. I don't envy President Bush for the decisions he's having to make.

That being said, there is something I do know or more accurately something I strongly believe. I believe we, as citizens of the United States of America, should support the troops at all costs. These brave men and women are willing to risk their lives to defend our freedoms. I can't imagine how it must feel for them and their families to see celebrities denouncing Bush, the potential war, and thus the troops themselves. It bothers me to no end that celebrities use their status to voice their opinions and somehow make it appear that they are in the majority when that's not necessarily the case. Yes, they have the right to give their opinion but because they are literally given the stage at award shows, etc., I feel they take advantage of this attention and make themselves more important than they really are.

So I want to spread the word about this petition to do my part in supporting the troops. These people have families they've left behind, things put on hold, all to do the duty they voluntarily signed up for. I think it's admirable. Anyway, I've already signed it and hope you will too. God bless America and God bless the troops.

The petition reads as follows:

Let there be no doubt in your minds as you embark on this mission that you carry the hopes, the prayers, and the gratitude of your country with you.

Every generation learns anew that freedom carries a steep price. You are paying that price with your courage and your commitment, no less than those who fought to liberate Europe, to defend freedom in Korea and Vietnam, and to combat aggression in Kuwait a decade ago.

As our fathers and grandfathers fought against and defeated Nazism, Fascism, and Communism, our generation must confront terrorism. You have answered the call.

We know that you neither wanted this war nor fired the first shot. The war against America began on September 11, 2001, with the murder of 3,000 Americans. You fight in their name.

You fight in the name of our children and our children's children who will not have to face a world dominated by terror.

And you fight in the name of each and every one of us who sign below.

We know that all war is brutal, ugly, and dangerous. But we also know that the price of inaction is even worse. We have learned the lessons of history - that the fruit of appeasement is war on an even more brutal scale.

You fight so that the world will not have to face the nightmare of a tyrant like Saddam Hussein armed with chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons which he can use to threaten, intimidate, and murder. You fight today so that others will not have to fight even more savage battles in the future.

We know that you have seen the antiwar protests around the world and in our own country. But know this: your country is behind you.

You are our sons, our daughters, our brothers and sisters, our wives and husbands. You are the best this country has to offer.

In the difficult hours ahead, as President Bush said, "the success of our cause will depend on you. Your training has prepared you. Your honor will guide you. You believe in America, and America believes in you."

You fight IN OUR NAME.

If you are so inclined, please go to and you will see the "In Our Name" information and you can sign the petition there.  Thank you.

UPDATE 3/17/03:  The petition at the aforementioned site has been closed in order to send the names to the troops.  However, if you'd still like to show your support for our troops, you can go to the following link and sign your name.
