Beyonce, West Lead BET Awards Nominations
Posted by LaDale Anderson on May 27, 2012 - 6:47:46 PM

HOLLYWOOD—The nominees for the 2012 BET Awards were announced on Tuesday, May 22, and leading the pack of nominees is rapper Kanye West with a total of seven nominations including two for Video of the Year.  Following close behind is triple-threat Beyonce, with six nominations including two nods for Video of the Year.  R&B superstar Usher will battle West and Beyonce for the coveted Video of the Year award for his video “Climax.”

Beyonce is nominated for six BET Awards including Video of the Year.

Hosting the ceremony is actor Samuel L. Jackson.  When I heard this I was a bit surprised, but I have a feeling he is going to host a ceremony unlike any from the past.  Nominees for Best Female R&B Artist include Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Marsha Ambrosius, Rihanna and Melanie Fiona.   Best Male R&B contenders include Chris Brown, Bruno Mars, Trey Songz, Usher and Miguel.  In the Best New Artist category, musical acts vying for the prize include Big Sean, Diggy Future, Meek Mill and ASAP Rocky.

“The Help,”  “Laugh At My Pain,” “Red Tails,” “Good Deeds” and “Jumping the Broom” will all compete in the Best Movie category.  I have an inkling that “The Help” will come out on top as it had a stellar awards season.  The Viewer’s Choice Award is the sole category that allows the public to voice their selection on who should win.  The nominees for the award include Mindless Behavior “Hello,” Beyonce “Love on Top,” Chris Brown “Turn Up the Music,” Drake feat. Lil Wayne & Tyga “The Motto,” Wale feat. Miguel “Lotus Flower Bomb” and Jay-Z & Kanye West feat. Otis for “Otis.”

Best Actor contenders include Common, Don Cheadle, Kevin Hart, Denzel Washington and Idris Elba.  For Best Actress frontrunner Viola Davis will battle against Regina King, Zoe Saldana, Angela Bassett and Taraji P. Henson.  Rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West are both missing from the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist category which is stunning considering both of them nabbed so many nominations.  It will be a battle between Lil Wayne, Drake, Big Sean, J. Cole, Young Jeezy and Rick Ross.

Performers for the 2012 BET Awards are slated to be announced in the coming weeks.  One singer audiences can expect to hit the stage is R&B crooner Chris Brown who has already been announced as a performer. The ceremony will take place on July 1 live from the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium.
