Bieber Big Winner At American Music Awards
Posted by LaDale Anderson on Nov 19, 2012 - 7:54:24 PM

LOS ANGELES—It’s the beginning of awards season TV lovers. Just in time before everyone begins stuffing their stomachs, the 2012 American Music Awards were held on Sunday, November 18 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Pop sensation Justin Bieber had a huge night taking home three awards including Artist of the Year. The pop star beat such powerhouses like Katy Perry and Rihanna.  He was ecstatic while accepting the award; his mother joined him on stage with the most coveted trophy of the night.  He also won awards for Pop/Rock Male Artist and Pop/Rock Album for “Believe.”

Other big winners of the night included Nicki Minaj who walked away with two trophies including Rap/Hip-Hop Album for “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.” She was gracious while on stage collecting each award.   Carly Rae Jepsen was victorious in the New Artist of the Year category defeating perennial favorite One Direction.  I was certain the boy band would win, but was ecstatic for Jepsen’s win; her “Call Me Maybe” dominated the charts this summer.

Enough discussion on the winners, let’s chat about what will have everyone raving the next few days which are the performances.  R&B crooner Usher opened the show dancing to a medley of his songs including “Climax.”  The performance started off a bit slow, but Usher increased the intensity as time progressed.  Taylor Swift wowed the crowd with an adult version of her new single “I Knew You Were Trouble;” a very romantic tale full of allure and dramatics.

Carly Rae Jepsen had a fun rendition on the stage, first kicking off with her new single “This Kiss,” but later followed up with “Call Me Maybe” which got the crowd riled up.  The original “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson sang off her pipes with hits like “Since You’ve Been Gone,” “Stronger” and “Catch My Breathe.”  I think everyone will agree with me when I say there’s a reason she is known as the biggest superstar from that series.

Nicki Minaj hit the stage on two separate occasions, first as a solo artist performing her single “Freedom” complete with a choir and then took the stage a second time to sing alongside Justin Bieber for their hit “Beauty and the Beat.”

Pink proved that no other performer does it like her as she delivered a stellar rendition of her song “Try.”  It was complete with acrobatics and theatrics.  It was absolutely hands down one of the memorable acts of the night.  One of the heartfelt performances of the night came from music legend Stevie Wonder who paid tribute to the late great Dick Clark.  Wonder could not hit the stage without performing his contagious hit “My Cherie Amour” amongst a list of other classics; a true highlight of the night.

The biggest mash-up of the night that wowed audiences was between international superstar Psy and hip-hop artist MC Hammer who performed his hit “Gangnam Style” and “2 Legit 2 Quit.” It was some of the best choreography on the stage of the night.  The audience was on their feet and jamming to the performance.  Considering that this was the American Music Awards 40th anniversary I was expecting quite a bit more star-power and surprises at the ceremony, but that was not the case. It was not a memorable awards ceremony, but some of the performances were top-notch.  Here’s hoping next year delivers quite a few more surprises.
