HOLLYWOOD—Rapper Kanye West released a new song titled "Theraflu" on Wednesday, April 3. In just one song, West managed to declare his love for his new lady love Kim Kardashian while also angering PETA members and the makers of Theraflu.
Media sites have been buzzing with the news of West and Kardashian's newly discovered relationship with multiple reports of them spending quite a bit of time together in the past week. In "Theraflu," West mentions Kardashian as well as her ex-fiance, NBA player Kris Humphries: "I admit I fell in love with Kim 'round the same time she fell in love
with him/ Well that's cool, baby girl, do your thing/ Lucky I ain't
had Jay drop him from the team," raps West.
Kardashian had an interview on NBC’s “Today” on Friday and tried to stay as vague as possible about the relationship. She merely said that she liked the song and that she and West have been friends for years. "You know, you never know what the future holds or where my life will take me," said Kardashian.
As for PETA, it has a different take on the song entirely. The organization People for Ethical Treatment of Animals was enraged due to West's lyrical content in the song, which includes "Someone tell PETA my mink is draggin' on the floor."
PETA’s senior vice presidentDan Mathews fired back with a
statement on Thursday that said, “What’s draggin’ on the floor is Kanye’s
reputation as a man with no empathy for animals or human beings.” Mathews went on to say that West is "a great musician but
doesn't seem to have the fashion sense to design anything more than caveman
Mathews was referring to West's fashion line that debuted during Paris Fashion Week which included many articles of fur and alligator skin. PETA hopes that West will join stars such as Natalie Portman, Pink, and Russel Simmons, who have support PETA by refusing to associate with fashion that involves animal skins.
The makers of cold medicine Theraflu have also issued a statement to indicate disapproval of West's reference to their product. "We in no way endorse or approve of the references or use of the image and likeness of Theraflu in this manner," said a representative for the company.
West released the cover art for the single "Theraflu" on his Twitter account on Friday. The cover art is of a topless woman wearing a fur coat with her head replaced by a bottle of Theraflu.
West released another single on Thursday, titled "Mercy," which is meant to be the first single off his upcoming album "G.O.O.D. Music."
