Perry, Gaga Big Winners At 2011 MTV VMAs

HOLLYWOOD—Well, amid all the glitz and glamour at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, Katy Perry was the big winner of the night, taking home two awards. She was victorious for Video of the Year for her hit single “Firework,” beating out favorites Adele's “Rolling in the Deep” and Beastie Boys' “Make Some Noise.” Lady Gaga continued to prove she’s unlike no other, as she opened up the show dressed as a man resembling her alter ego Jo Calderon. She gave a close to three-minute rant before performing her hit single “You and I.” While the performance wasn’t memorable, it did keep audiences on the edge of their seat to see what Gaga may be planning next.
MTV chose not to have a host this year, and it became apparent throughout the ceremony. It felt as presenter after presenter just hit the stage to hand out awards; there was a lack of energy that is commonly seen at the awards show. Pop princess Britney Spears collected the Moonmen for Best Pop Video for “Til The End of Time.” She’s always gracious and thanked her sons while accepting the award. The crowd was in for a surprise when both Kanye West and Jay-Z hit the stage to perform their hit single “Otis.”
The Foo Fighters took home the award for Best Rock Video for “Walk,” while Best Hip-Hop Video went to an overdressed Nicki Minaj for “Super Bass.” Kanye West got the opportunity to take the stage as he accepted the award for Best Collaboration with Katy Perry for “E.T.” There was a bit of awkward silence as Perry joked about West’s infamous speech at the 2009 VMA’s where he interrupted Taylor Swift during her win for Best Female Video.
If there was one performance that appeared to deliver great stage presence it was Adele, who belted out her single “Someone Like You.” The gal can sing and proved it ever so effortlessly last night. In what appeared to be a set-up, Kim Kardashian presented the award for Best Male Video to Justin Bieber for “U Smile.” Really didn’t think he had a shot at the award, but when it was announced that Kardashian was presenting the award, I knew he was going to win.
Another frenetic performance of the night came from Chris Brown, who performed to a medley of his songs as he jumped, flipped and danced all over the stage. He later received a standing ovation from the audience. Britney Spears was presented with the Vanguard Award by Lady Gaga, as a sleuth of dancers paid tribute to some of Spears’s iconic videos. Both women later introduced a pregnant Beyoncé to the stage, as she performed a subdued version of “Love On Top.” As much as I hate to say it, Beyoncé’s pregnancy was the highlight of the awards show. It seemed like it was the only thing that everyone was chatting about. Who won, who performed, none of that seemed to matter last night.
Excitement couldn’t be contained on the stage as Tyler The Creator won for Best New Artist. He spewed so many expletives during his speech; viewers probably had no idea what he was saying. Lady Gaga was victorious two years in a row for Best Female Video for her resounding “Born This Way.” Rapper Lil’
Wayne closed out the ceremony as he ran and jumped across the stage with a rendition of hit “How to Love.”
The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards was an absolute bore fest; lackluster performances, no memorable moments, no host. Time would have been better spent watching a new episode of HBO’s “True Blood.” Here’s hoping the 2012 Video Music Awards have artists ready to energize audiences and a host that can deliver the laughs, but keep the ceremony going. Are you still discussing the MTV Video Music Awards or have you moved on to something else?
