UNITED STATES—, the online retailing giant, has announced plans to hire at least 7,000 workers across the U.S. in both the fulfillment centers and customer service departments.

Kelly Cheeseman, spokeswoman for Amazon, said they looked at how many jobs are currently open and they decided to hire more than 5,000 in the fulfillment network and more than 2,000 in the customer service department.

“We are hiring to meet the needs of the growing customer demand,” Cheeseman told Canyon News.

The fulfillment center, according to Cheeseman, receives products from vendors and ships out to customers and essentially picks, packs and ships the orders.

In order to help cope with the growth and demand of customers, Amazon opened 20 fulfillment centers last year and has plans to open five more this year.

According to the press release, the fulfillment network will include jobs such as picking, packing and shipping orders with “competitive pay, a comprehensive benefits package, company stock awards and bonuses.”

The press release also stated that the median pay in the fulfillment network is “30 percent higher than that of people who work in traditional retail stores.”

“We’re focused on sustained innovation across Amazon and want to help our employees succeed—whether at Amazon or elsewhere—so we offer programs like Career Choice, where we’ll pay for up to 95% of eligible employees’ tuition regardless of whether the skills they learn are relevant to a career at Amazon,” said Dave Clark, vice president of worldwide operations and customer service at Amazon in release.

The fulfillment network jobs will be full-time, while the customer service jobs will be full-time, part-time and seasonal.

Despite seeing a rise of 22 percent in revenue from last year, Amazon reported a second quarter loss of about $7 million, according to Annalisa Quinn, Two-Way’s resident book-world expert.

The announcement to hire comes a day before President Obama plans on visiting a distribution center in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he plans to give speeches on the economy and jobs in the area, according to the White House.
