Archbishop Philip M. Hannan Honored
Posted by Contributor on Oct 7, 2011 - 8:42:53 AM

NEW ORLEANS, La.—On Thursday in an elegant French Quarter cathedral, Archbishop Philip Hannan, one of the most revered Catholic leaders in the United States was buried at a Mass at the famed St. Louis Cathedral. His Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Gregory Aymond, 18 Catholic bishops and several hundred priests. Mourners waited outside to view the casket of the beloved clergyman. The Mass was held at 2 p.m. on a sunny day in the Crescent City.

Hannan, who served as New Orleans' archbishop for more than three decades, died Sept. 29 at age 98. He delivered eulogies for President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert Kennedy, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s widow Victoria Reggie Kennedy attended the service. 23 members of the Hannan family also attended. Honorary Pallbearers included several of the late Archbishop’s friends.

The archdiocese stated that Gayle M. Benson and Tom M. Benson, Honorable Corinne C. (Lindy) Boggs, Joseph C. Canizaro, Alma A. Cartagena, Klara B. Cvitanovich, Dr. Norman C. Francis, Mrs. Lawrence D. Garvey, Alden J. “Doc” Laborde, Anne M. Milling, J. Garic Schoen, Phyllis M. Taylor, and V. M. Wheeler III, all served as honorary pall bearers.

18 Catholic bishops from across the country concelebrated the service with several hundred priests from the Archdiocese of New Orleans and beyond, the archdiocese said.

10clergy and religious leaders from other faith traditions attended, and members of the revered 82nd Airborne, the brigade Hannan served with during World War II, served as honor guard.

Louisiana lawmakers including Governor Bobby Jindal, New Orleans newly elected mayor, Mitch Landrieu, Jefferson Parish President John Young, St. Bernard Parish President Craig Taffaro, New Orleans Police Chief Ronal Serpas and several parish and city council people and state legislators and representatives were in attendance.

The archdiocese graciously set up a large screen in Jackson Square with seating for those not able to be inside the cathedral to take part and witness the service.
