Art Modell Dies At Age 87

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND—Art Modell, national football team owner of the Baltimore Ravens, has died at the age of 87 on Thursday September 6. Modell was taken to the Johns Hopkins Hospital Wednesday for reasons unknown, and died Thursday morning. His sons stated that he died of natural causes.
Modell is known for his time as the national football team owner of the Cleveland Browns and his community involvement in charities. He was the owner of the Browns from 1961-1995, and then moved the team to Baltimore owning the Ravens from 1996-2004.
With the Ravens, Modell won the Superbowl in 2011. He had been repeatedly nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame; unfortunately, he was never elected. Modell was the league president from 1967-1969, and had a huge contribution in the making of Monday Night Football.
The owner was born on June 23, 1925, marrying Patricia and adopting her two sons David and John. His wife of 42 years had died in 2011; he is survived by his two sons and six grandchildren. Not only was he an active member of the National Football League but also served in the Air Force fighting in World War II.
