LOS ANGELES—Following an interview with Fox News’ Religious Correspondent Lauren Green on Friday, July 26, Reza Aslan's book, “Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth,” is currently the No. 1 New York Times Bestseller. The book also moved from USA Today's list at No. 30 to No 27 after the interview.

The interview that was posted on Buzzfeed as “Is This the Most Embarrassing Interview Fox News Has Ever Done?" went viral on the internet and currently has 5.3 million views. Since then Aslan’s publisher, Random House, has printed an additional 180,000 copies.

The video was hailed as a far right conservative lash on the author, and as “Islamophobic by left-wing liberals, because Green asked Aslan why a Muslim wrote a book about Jesus, the founder of Christianity. Aslan responded to the question by saying that “Well, to be clear, I am a scholar of religions with four degrees, including one in the New Testament, and fluency in biblical Greek, who has been studying the origins of Christianity for two decades, who also just happens to be a Muslim."

He also stated that he has been “obsessed about the life of Jesus for more than a decade” and that he wrote the book “because it's my job as an academic. I am a professor of religion, including the New Testament. That's what I do for a living, actually."

Conservative media critic Brent Bozell indicated he would be the first person to stand up for Green and applaud her question. He indicated it was a question that needed to be asked. Aslan, emigrated from Iran to the USA when he was 7. When he was 13, he converted to Evangelical Christianity, and converted back to Islam. He is now a professor of creative writing at the University of California-Riverside. Aslan is also the author of the international bestseller, “No god, but God.”
