UNITED STATES—Microsoft founder and philanthropist, Bill Gates, has announced that his charity, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will give away $100,000 to the individual that develops the “next generation of condoms,” according to the website Grand Challenges in Global Health.

The foundation is seeking to find a condom that “preserves or enhances pleasure, in order to improve uptake and regular use.” The proposal indicates that while condoms are used by an “estimated 750 million people,” they also carry the stigma of decreasing pleasure during intercourse, thus reducing their use.

Furthermore, the proposal states that while condoms have been around for nearly 400 years the technology behind them remains fairly the same. Therefore, the foundation has initiated this proposal in the hopes of reducing unplanned pregnancy and disease throughout the world.

The foundation has set certain requirements in order for applicants to be eligible including having a testable hypothesis, an associated plan for how the idea would be tested or validated and yielding interpretable and unambiguous data. If applicants meet all requirements they will be considered for phase two of the project, in which they could win up to $1 million dollars.

Concepts that have the highest chance of being chosen are ones that use safe and practical materials, integrate innovative shapes to increase comfort and contain ideas from various fields including neurobiology and vascular biology. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, May 7, and all winners will be announced in November.
