Colorado Shooting Suspect In Court
Posted by Ryan J. Beard on Jul 25, 2012 - 9:50:15 PM

AURORA, CO—Flowers have begun to pile up near Century 16 theater in Aurora, Colorado in wake of the recent shooting that killed 12 and left 59 injured during midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.”  Christian Bale recently visited the victims and victim’s families in the nearby hospital unannounced.  In a recent statement released, Christian Bale stated, “Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them.”

Christian Bale’s director, Christopher Nolan released a similar statement, saying, “Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there... to watch a movie.”

He went on to say, “I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime.  The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me.  Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."

In response to the tragic shooting both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have halted their political campaigns and released statements of their own via social media.

Mitt Romney stated, “Ann and I are deeply saddened by the news of the senseless violence that took the lives of 15 people in Colorado and injured dozens more. We are praying for the families and loved ones of the victims during this time of deep shock and immense grief. We expect that the person responsible for this terrible crime will be quickly brought to justice.”

While Barack Obama stated “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and those injured in the tragic shooting in Aurora this morning. At this time, we believe that no OFA staff or volunteers have been injured. Additionally, all campaign-related events have been postponed until further notice. In this time of tragedy, it’s important for us to come together as one community and one family to comfort and console one another.”

The recent shooting has once again raised questions regarding our nation’s gun laws; however, neither Obama nor Romney have addressed the recently renewed issue.  Nevertheless, other politicians have taken the initiative. Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey has proposed a bill outlawing the sale of high-capacity gun magazines like those used by the suspected shooter.  Still, many gun advocates will continue to believe that if some outstanding citizen had possessed a gun within the theater lives could have been saved.

The suspected shooter possessed full body armor, several guns and thousands of rounds of ammo legally. He made his first court appearance this Monday. Suspect James Holmes appeared in court with his hair still dyed red, seemingly drowsy and disinterested. The next court proceedings will take place on Monday, July 30th where the prosecution will present their formal charges.
